Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) - French

Vision

The vision for our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum is to ensure children develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. The main language we learn in KS2 is French, although we also aim to help pupils develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries around the world. We encourage children’s confidence and creative skills through language learning and their curiosity about language; teaching them that language has a structure and that the structure differs from one language to another. We intend to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills throughout the key stage that will then provide them with the foundations for future language learning.

Coverage

Our MFL curriculum follows the Twinkl PlanIt planning, a scheme of work that enables progression of language acquisition. Some themes are repeated throughout the key stage; however, the content and complexity of the vocabulary and language structures increases as children move through the year groups. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences.

Evidence

The materials used to plan and teach MFL ensure that children are accessing work at age related expectations and result in the desired impact of children acquiring knowledge, understanding and an ability to apply their language learning. Children are assessed in line with curriculum requirements, through teacher judgements, and outcomes are recorded on our online assessment system at the end of each term. Children will leave our school with a love of language learning and a knowledge base which can be built upon throughout their secondary education.
